I was born, raised and have lived in Richmond Hill, Ontario, Canada my entire life. I would not want to live anywhere else. I love this town. When I wasn’t in front of my computer, I spent my childhood playing with Legos and Robotix, playing chess, spending time with friends riding my bike, skateboarding, competing on the Track & Field team in school, and waiting for and watching new episodes of my all-time favourite show Star Trek: The Next Generation
I am the founder, CEO and lead Technician for Carsonix Inc. My client list spans a diverse range of business types and models. I'll get your technology working properly so your business can thrive! As a business owner myself not only do I face similar problems and requirements as you do, but I specialize in technology so I can build your business up and manage it properly just as I do mine. As both the CEO and lead Technician I wear all the hats. Everything from consultations, sales and the real work of setting up your chosen technology solutions is done directly by me, so you avoid the frustration of other IT companies where you find yourself speaking with multiple people across a range of departments where oftentimes the left hand doesn't know what the right hand is doing. I get to know you, your technology, your business and that allows me to optimize my understanding and support for you. Furthermore, all work is done onsite at your home or business so you never have to worry about taking anything apart and bringing it to some shop where your privacy can be compromised. From a financial point of view, I offer upfront flat rate pricing with monthly subscriptions and optional support contracts that can be cancelled at any time. You will always know the final cost before you agree to anything. It’s also more cost effective than hiring a fulltime IT employee who spend much of their time doing nothing.
My love of technology started in childhood way back in the 1980s when I got my first computer; the Commodore 64 to play video games on. What sparked my interest in computers came about from my first "hack" on the C64 when I modified a videogame so the loading screen displayed "Created by Jason Carson" instead of the name of the official developers. (As an interesting bit of computer history, the C64 still holds the #1 spot for most units sold for any computer model).
After my C64, I graduated into the world of IBM personal computers. My first PC was a 486DX with 4MB of memory and a 500MB hard drive running Windows 3.11 on DOS 5.
One day in 1994 my grade 10 science teacher told the class about this new thing called “The Internet" and how amazing it was and the promise it had for the future. I came home that day and immediately told my mom we need to get the Internet. I remember downloading both Internet Explorer and Netscape Navigator from some random FTP server. Both web browsers are now defunct, but Netscape Navigator has in some sense morphed into modern day Firefox.
Once I jumped on the Internet, I realized the possibilities were endless. I was chatting on IRC (Internet Relay Chat, the social media of the day) where I met a pen pal in Australia (My mom wasn't very happy with the phone bill when I called her one day, lol). I was instant messaging friends with an app called ICQ (I seek you), browsing websites, playing games, going to LAN gaming parties and computer clubs.
Then in 1997 I discovered GNU/Linux and an online community of fellow computer Nerds where we would help each other out and my knowledge of technology skyrocketed. I continued my hobby and in the early 2000s I started up a hobbyist news website called pctalk.org (I have no affiliation with the current iteration of this website) on a custom-built server I setup running out of my parents’ basement. I worked at a few tech companies such as Celestica and MDG, gained my certifications. Many years later I started freelancing as a computer technician and from there I created Carsonix Inc. My first break came when I landed Suburban Services LTD HVAC services as my first business client, a local family business and a pillar of the community having served the residents of Richmond Hill for over 50 years.
I do my best to use technology to improve people’s lives, to bring them peace of mind, to solve their problems and teach them in simple terms how to manage their lives and businesses in the digital world. Long term I would like Carsonix Inc. to become an advocate that promotes the use of technology for the benefit of humankind. I find it very disturbing to witness governments now using the strengths of technology and artificial intelligence against the weaknesses of human biology. As a benign example I won a small chess championship in primary school, but I can no longer beat a computer. China is the world’s foremost example of this trend, and they are merely in the horse and buggy stage of what will be possible.
As technology has become ubiquitous in our lives and everybody uses it for every imaginable purpose, I have a huge range of fantastic memories but the funniest moment and what stands out the most in my mind is the time 94-year-old gentlemen in a senior’s residence, Donald, called me to help him with his Mac. When I arrived onsite, I got his printer working, but then he asked me if I could look at the new electric wheelchair that he had purchased for his wife the year prior. The manufacturer delivered it without setting it up and the senior’s residence wasn’t helping him, so he asked me if I knew how to get it working. I told him I don’t have any experience with wheelchairs, but I’ll see what I can do. Turned out the battery wasn’t connected, and when I connected it, it wasn’t setup properly “to just work” so it was making beeping noises and wouldn’t move. I quickly researched it online, read the manual that came with it, then put it together properly. Then to test it out I sat in the wheelchair and started driving myself around the apartment. Donald was so happy he started doing a little dance and we were all laughing watching me driving around his apartment in their electric wheelchair. His wife was ecstatic because she was no longer confined to a chair or her bed. Their happiness and her mobility was the most rewarding experience I've had.
I graduated high school with honours as an Ontario Scholar and was accepted into Canada’s premier University, The University of Toronto, with an interest in evolutionary biology and genetics. I never studied computer science or psychology in school, they have simply been hobbies and interests of mine for decades. And I use both as tools to optimize myself (8w7 INTJ) and my company for the benefit of my clients. The way I see it every client comes with a minimum of 2 computers: the electronic one on their desk but also the biological one in their head, so it’s a thrill to apply my interests in technology and psychology matching world class technical support with premier customer service.
